Meet Our Wonderful Providers

Kirt Larson MSN, FNP-C

A Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner and enthusiast of all things outdoors, Kirt Larson cares for patients of all ages. Kirt received his nursing degree from Brigham Young University and excelled as a trauma nurse in the emergency room for 14 years before returning to BYU for his Master’s degree in Family Practice. In 1999, Kirt opened the doors to Step Mountain Medical and has enjoyed building relationships with his many patients who describe him as kind and fun. His compassionate staff completes the warmth and caring concern that his patients have come to rely on. Kirt combines his more than 30 years of professional practice with his personal insight and experience from raising his five daughters and one son with his wife, Sandra.

In his spare time, Kirt enjoys gardening (especially tomato plants) and adding more canoes to his collection (12 at the moment). He spends much of his time mentoring scouts (he recently received the Talon Award for his service) and has a small mass of ice fishing poles that he and the scouts use at lakes all over Utah. Metal-detecting, camping, snowmobiling, boating, and raising pigs with his son could keep him talking for hours. If you ask him, he will tell you his favorite color is camouflage, and will most likely be found in camo when not wearing his scrubs. Kirt invites you to “Step to a healthier life” by joining the family of Step Mountain Medical.

Joylyn Cluny, MSN, FNP-C

Jo Cluny graduated with her nursing degree from the U of U and joined the pediatric unit at St. Mark's hospital, where she enjoyed working with young patients and their families. She was later invited to join Labor and Delivery at St. Mark's and found an exciting new experience awaiting her. This was the beginning of her extensive experience in women's health, including Labor and Delivery, teaching prenatal classes, and assisting in C-sections and other female surgeries. After several years, Jo decided she wanted to continue her learning by completing her Masters Degree at BYU and joining a group of OBGYNs who needed someone with her understanding of women's health. She also taught OBGYN nursing care at Westminster College for many years, and is very excited to be part of the Step Mountain Medical team.

In her free time, Jo enjoys going for long walks, reading, and cooking. She can talk about sewing and quilting all day long and loves to help friends by machine quilting for them. Jo is a world traveler. While living in New Zealand as a teenager, she learned to surf, make Polynesian arts and crafts, and do native dances and poi balls. Since then, she has also traveled to France, England, and Israel. She loves meeting new people and seeing new places.

Michelle Smith MSN, FNP-C

Michelle is board certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She completed her undergraduate nursing education at Ricks College and the University of Utah. She spent 14 years working as a pediatric RN for Primary Children's Hospital. Michelle completed her master's degree at Brigham Young University. So, she bleeds Red and Blue. Michelle is passionate about her profession and gives all she has to her patients and their families. Though her nursing background is pediatrics, she enjoys interacting and caring for patients of all ages. Michelle's love for nursing took her to the island of Tonga in 2013 for a humanitarian mission. Michelle also enjoys mentoring and teaching students. Michelle joined the Step Mountain Medical family unofficially as a nurse practitioner student. During her 4 month internship at the clinic, she fell in love with the clinic, the staff, and all of their patients. She was thrilled when given the opportunity to join Step Mountain Medical officially.

Michelle is the proud mother of 5 children and one Yorkshire terrier, who have been her greatest teachers and best patients. They continually inspire her to be a better person and provider. Michelle's husband is Bryce, and he assists her in keeping balance in her life by being her travel buddy and shoulder to lean on. In her spare time (spare time, whats that), Michelle loves to travel and spend time with her family. On a Friday night she loves nothing more then to put her pjs on, and enjoy a movie while eating popcorn with M&Ms. Her other hobbies include reading, exercise, time with friends, and an occasional crafty project. Michelle would be privileged to be a partner in your health care.
